Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has 63 full-time firefighters, 168 retained firefighters, 13 fire control staff and 28 support staff.

The Island has a population of 160,000 residents, which doubles periodically throughout the year with visitors (with a total of around 2.5 million visitors to the Island per annum).

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has some of the best operational figures in the country, with an exemplary low level of fire deaths.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue staff do a great deal of voluntary work and regularly raise money for local and national charities. In the last couple of years alone nearly £30,000 has been raised with three projects (Square To Square Charity Cycle Challenge, Wight Extreme Hike and two MacMillan Coffee Mornings).

The Isle of Wight Branch of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) are committed to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service maintaining it's identity and it remaining independent, whilst being managed by local management and politicians, as part of the Isle of Wight Council.

The FBU are fully committed to modernisation of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, delivering a high level of service that the public deserves. However, this modernisaton must be balanced against ensuring the safety of the public and firefighters is maintained.
